Cupping massage: suction technique for deep tissue

In cupping massage, suction cups — silicone, glass or plastic — are placed on the skin and moved. The negative pressure lifts the tissue upward, working in the opposite direction to classic pressure massage. The result is a deep separation of muscle layers and fascia.

How cupping massage works

Depending on the technique, the cups are either held in place (static cupping) or glided over the skin with oil (dynamic cupping / cupping massage). The cupping massage in wellness studios is almost always the dynamic version — the cups glide over the back, shoulders or legs.

  • Suction pulls tissue upward rather than pressing down
  • Dynamic: cups glide over skin with oil
  • Typical areas: back, shoulders, thighs

What to know about cupping massage

Cupping massage can leave reddish circles or marks on the skin — this is normal and not a sign of injury. They usually fade within a few days. If you have an important event coming up, plan your massage timing accordingly.

  • Reddish marks after the massage are normal and fade
  • Plan: at least 3–5 days before events with exposed skin
  • Duration: usually 30–60 minutes as part of a larger massage
Is cupping massage painful?

It can feel intense, especially in tense areas. Most people experience it as a strong pulling pressure — less comfortable than gentle massage, but not painful. The therapist can adjust the suction level.

Who should avoid cupping massage?

People with sensitive skin, skin inflammation or varicose veins in the area should mention this when booking. If you take blood thinners or other medications, check with your doctor first.
