The classic massage — also called Swedish massage — is the best-known western massage technique. It uses five basic strokes: effleurage, kneading, friction, tapotement and vibration. For many people it is the entry point into massage.

Classic and Swedish — what is the difference?

Actually nothing. Swedish massage is the international term, classic massage is the one commonly used in German-speaking countries. Both physiotherapists and wellness studios use the term classic massage in Germany — the underlying techniques are identical.

  • Classic equals Swedish — same techniques, different names
  • Five basic strokes: effleurage, kneading, friction, tapotement, vibration
  • Can be applied to the whole body or individual areas

Frequently asked questions

In a classic massage the therapist uses the five established Western strokes: effleurage, petrissage, friction, tapotement and vibration. The session is usually structured — either the whole body is treated or specific areas such as the back, neck and shoulders. Classic massage is always done on a table, usually with massage oil.
Classic massages are flexibly bookable: 30 minutes for a short back treatment, 60 minutes for a solid full-body session, 90 minutes for a thorough treatment. Many studios offer all three options. For a first session, 60 minutes is a good starting point.
Yes, for a classic oil massage you undress. You lie on a table and are covered with a sheet — only the area currently being treated is uncovered. This is standard and professionally done. If you prefer not to, ask the studio whether they also offer clothed variations.
The intensity is easily adjustable — that is one of the advantages of classic massage. Gentle for relaxation, medium pressure for general tension, firmer for deeper muscle work. Tell the therapist at the start which intensity you prefer — they will work accordingly.
Classic massage suits almost everyone — it is the best-known and most widely available Western massage style. Particularly well suited as a first massage ever, as a regular relaxation treatment, or if you simply know you enjoy flowing oil massage.
